Description
Custom Edo-Period Kamishimo Set
Step into the formal world of Edo-period Japan with a custom-made kamishimo set, handcrafted for historical reenactment, cosplay, stage productions, martial arts presentations, and other Japanese-inspired costuming applications.
The word kamishimo is commonly translated as “top and bottom,” referring to the coordinated pairing of a kataginu shoulder garment and hakama trousers. Traditionally worn by samurai as formal dress, the kamishimo served much like a modern suit—giving the wearer a more structured, dignified, and ceremonial appearance.
The Edo-style kataginu features distinctive pleated shoulders that create a broad, dramatic silhouette. Its open-sided construction allows it to be worn over a kimono while adding formality without restricting movement.
Each set includes:
- One custom-made Edo-style kataginu
- One custom-made pair of hakama
The kimono shown or worn beneath the set is not included.
Traditionally, the kataginu and hakama are made from matching fabric. Ronin Threadworks also allows you to choose separate colors for each garment, giving you the option of a fully coordinated set or a contrasting custom combination.
The garments are typically constructed from durable cotton twill or poplin fabric and made according to your selected measurements and preferences.
